Hands on Review of the M400#

I was lucky enough to borrow a Toshiba M400 from Toshiba New Zealand for a couple of days.  I picked it up today before lunch when I was passing by.  I had quite a busy day today so the thing sat on my desk all day largely unmolested.  Talk about torment!

Conclusion

Overall I am very pleased with the M400.  The device is pleasant to look at and the design is very functional.  Some of the value add software is excellent.  Also – and very importantly – Toshiba clearly listened to it’s customers when they griped about the brightness and viewing angle on the M200 because the problem is well and truly gone on the M400.  With the Dual Core processor the M400 should be able to make Vista race along.  I might give that a try tomorrow J

PLEASE try Vista on it, this is the one thing that is keeping me from buying the m400, i want to know how well the gma 950 is really able to handle Vista & aero glass. Anxiously awaiting your report on the m400 & aero

C) Battery state (battery 1)

D) Battery state (battery 2)

Can this guy take two batteries? I thought that optical drive bay could only be used for an additional hard drive. Anything you can discover would be appreciated.

I have one on order (arriving any day now!). One thing I have not noticed mention of is whether the M400 has an accelerometer (and corresponding auto-orient and secutiry alarm software) like I have on the M200. Honestly, I never used the latter secutiry feature, but I always liked that I could orient the machine, hit the button, and it would figure out what way was up.

Thanks,
D.

Please test out battery life. We are all dying to find out if the dual core is an improvement or not in that respect! Thanks for the great review!

Also, I've heard that the fan runs continuously. Is that true? I'd love to hear your comments on that and any heat issues.

Fred - there is an extended battery available but it does not use the optical drive bay - it clips onto the bottom. I'll scan the diagram in the manual and post it latter on today.

Russell - The fan does run constantly - though to be honest I had not even noticed that it was doing it. It is very quiet. The exterior of the unit remains cool to the touch even when it is running on my desk all day.

Craig,

You are doing the Tablet PC community a great service by posting this review. Thanks!

BTW, let us know when you try Vista on it. That's the number one deciding factor for me. Otherwise, I'll probably pick up a HP TC4200 instead.

No pressure :)

I also tried to buy the computer with the upgraded screen. The salesman on the phone told me that their supplier has some issues and they do not expect to have the new monitor until near the end of the month. He did not seem to have any desire to put me on a wait-list although I could have pushed harder. - Thank you for your review :)

I am just wondering if Toshiba Advanced Port Replicator III can be used with M400 - has anyone tried it? I called Toshiba Techies and they told me it is not compatible but it maybe because they just want to sell the cranky Express Port Replicator for M400 even though it contains bo firewire port... any ideas?

I've had my m400 for about a week or so now (hires screen, 512mb) and compared to my previous notebook (Dell D600) I sometimes find it to be a little sluggish. I'm sure part of it will be resolved by getting additional memory (used to have 1gb + dedicated video).

But it sure looks nice, screen is great (do need good eyes though), it's light etc.

The fingerprint-reader-thingy fails 9 out of 10 times for me... so I'm not using that.

Some questions that were asked:
- Yes, fan runs constantly
- No, no battery in the optical drive space.. don't know what the second light is for.
- Don't know about Vista
- Battery life is okay for me (lots of hours browsing and OneNote-ing), I haven't checked the exact hours I get.

Craig, could you take some photos about the enlarged screen with zoom function on?

It's me again, what are the zoom in resolutions? Is it as clear as the native resolution(1400x1050)? I'm from HK and M400 hasn't official launched here yet.

Hi Joe,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I can't take photos as I no longer have the unit. I had an M400 for a week or so for the review and had to give it back. I am hoping to get one again soon as my employer is going to roll them out internally.

The zoom button is a bit of a misnomer - it simply is an easy way to change the screen resolution. From memory it toggled between about four different resolutions ranging from 1024x768 to 1400x1050. My preference was the 1400x1050, but others I work with preferred lower resolutions.

HTH,

Craig
